Stafford Hospitality B.I.K.E. Program

Stafford Hospitality has established B.I.K.E., Building Incentives for Kids’ Education, an attendance incentive program that has been successful in schools. Stafford Hospitality's owned and managed hotels donate one bicycle and helmet per quarter to two local schools that teach pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Each quarter, every school has a drawing for the bike. Every child with perfect attendance for the attendance period has his/her name in the drawing pool. Additionally, children with perfect attendance for the entire school year have their names entered in a separate drawing from the quarterly drawings. The bikes are typically given away over the intercom, via closed-circuit television, or at a school-wide assembly. The program has proven to increase attendance among students. Collectively, Stafford gives away more than 100 bikes each year.

Branson Fest being Replaced

After 16 years of kicking off the spring entertainment season, BransonFest is history.Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Director of Public Relations Lynn Berry said the five-day BransonFest, once filled with entertainers, businesses and crafters, is being replaced with a longer event called Ozark Mountain Spring.“We are working on ideas to bring more events and festivals to that time period and are very excited about a similar branding campaign for the springtime that we enjoy with Ozark Mountain Christmas,” Berry said.For years, the Dutton family has showcased its talents at BransonFest.“BransonFest has done very good things for us in the past,” said Judith Dutton, assistant theater manager. “I’m sad to see it go, but excited to see what the new program has to offer.”Berry said it made sense to cover the entire season. “Things just needed to be more than five days,”she said. The new events will extend the opportunity to bring more people to Branson and stir up more interest in what Branson has to offer, Berry said. “How successful Ozark Mountain Christmas is something we wanted to emulate for the spring,” she said. When asked if attendance at BransonFest had dropped, Berry said “a little,” but that “we continued to see a strong turnout.”Berry said she didn’t believe the BransonFest event had lost money in the past.The chamber recently received $150,000 in funding from the Tourism Community Enhancement District to fund Ozark Mountain Spring.Berry said the chamber would like to have an event or festival every weekend throughout the three month season.“We can’t promise for 2009, but we’ll get a good start,” she said.

Energy Eye™ is proving itself to be a viable solution in the hospitality energy-management field. Recently Stafford Hospitality, a Tifton, Ga.-based hotel-management and ownership company, selected the new Energy Eye™ Wireless Radio Frequency EMS over the systems of Onity, INNCOM International, Lodging Technology and Smart Systems, as the first such system to be installed in its hotels.
Stafford Hospitality owns and/or manages eight mid-market hotels in the Southeast and Midwest. The company has installed 190 guestrooms at the Holiday Inn Tifton and will install another 171 rooms over the next two months. Rochester Hills-based Energy Eye™ developed and manufactures an affordable, easily installed, stand-alone Wireless Radio Frequency EMS that enhances guest comfort—and guest satisfaction—while drastically reducing room electricity expenses related to the ever-increasing costs of energy.
“We will be installing the Energy Eye™ system throughout our owned properties,” said Susan Smith, Stafford Hospitality’s Controller. “Managed properties will be advised of savings potential and decisions made at each property’s management level.”
Given the projected energy savings for the Holiday Inn Tifton, chances are excellent that Stafford Hospitality’s managed properties will make the same decision Stafford executives did for their corporately owned hotels.
“We have been ‘guaranteed’ a savings of more than $50,000 over 23 months,” Smith said, “and we anticipate savings immediately upon installation.”
Stafford Hospitality had no energy-management system at any of its properties in the past, Smith said, but realized that with ever-escalating costs, it was time to invest in an energy-management system that was effective, affordable, and saved on costs while enhancing guest satisfaction.

Cuts in federal funding for West Nile virus surveillance has affected Georgia’s programs, including Blackmore’s mosquito collection and virus testing. As a result, he had to request additional funding from Lowndes County and the City of Valdosta for arboviral surveillance -- research on viruses spread by mosquitoes and other arthropods. Rep. Kingston is the ranking minority member of the U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture subcommittee, which allocates funding for West Nile virus surveillance and laboratory capacity for monitoring diseases like WNV.
